Article and ACF field reference

This reference describes custom article and profile fields verified in the active Aeon News installation. The fields are part of the platform itself, so every site has the same editor; a site can add its own fields. For where each field sits in the editor, with screenshots, see the field map.

Article extensions

Field	Type	Purpose
Full-width introduction	Text area	A prominent opening above the lead image for major features, interviews and investigations.
Alternative headline	Text	A shorter or differently arranged front-page/list headline that preserves the canonical headline’s meaning.
Information box	Rich text	Facts, methodology, timeline, links or supplementary context outside the main narrative.
Summary point 1–4	Text	Up to four independent points presenting the central findings or developments.

Featured image settings

Field	Type	Purpose
Image description	Text	Describes the subject and adds relevant context.
Copyright	Text	Photographer, agency or rights holder under newsroom policy.
Front-page image adjustment	Choice	Full width, right aligned, no featured image, columnist image, or columnist plus featured image.
Hide featured image	Toggle	Retains the image for listings and sharing but removes it from the top of the article.
Featured full-width content	Rich media	Replaces the lead position with a video, gallery or another approved embed.
Single Post Layout	Choice	Standard or full-width article presentation.

Authors, presentation and comments

Field	Type	Purpose
Genre	Choice	News, Analysis, Comment, Editorial, Column, Opinion piece, Reply, Letter or Review. See genres and opinion.
Writers	Writer register	One or more writers in order, staff or guest. See writers and bylines.
Title in this article	Text	Replaces the writer’s usual title in this article only.
Byline	Choice	Standard; Standard with signature box after the text only; Columnist; Columnist with portrait on the front page; Guest writer; Unsigned.
Drop cap	Toggle	A large first letter in the first paragraph.
Previously published	Address	The original of a text first published elsewhere, with source and date.
Hide comments	Toggle	Folds the comments behind a “Show comments” button.
Sponsored	Toggle	Activates the distinct sponsored/native presentation.

Feed headline and reading flow

Field	Type	Purpose
Column-one headline style	Choice	One of three bold or three light headline treatments in the principal feed.
Exclude load more	Toggle	Prevents the story from loading as the next article in continuous reading.

Author profile

Profiles can include a standard photo, columnist portrait, biography, role, location, beat summary, website and newsletter link. Some installations may expose a public contact field. Never publish personal contact details without an explicit decision.

Category controls

Categories can carry an opinion disclaimer. A separate setting can make a category available to the mobile app’s push or category flow; coordinate such changes with the app owner.

Internal notes

Custom notes are internal and are not a source for public copy. Do not store passwords, source-protected material, sensitive personal data or information that does not belong in the WordPress database.

Retired fields

Older installations may retain unused field definitions. Do not adopt one merely because it exists in the database. Verify that it appears in active admin, is consumed by the current theme and has an agreed purpose.
