Translate / Migrate

Copy articles from one Aeon News site to another, translated by AI or DeepL, as drafts for an editor to review.

Last updated 23 October 2026

Translate / Migrate copies articles from one Aeon News site to another and can translate them on the way, for example from a Swedish newspaper to its English or Finnish sister site. Each article arrives as a draft, so an editor always reads and publishes it on the receiving site.

For a continuous flow, where new articles are translated and set up automatically, see translation and publishing workflows. Translate / Migrate is the hands-on tool for selected articles and smaller batches.

Setting up

Both sites need the add-on. The settings are under Settings › Migrate & Translate, with the tabs General Settings, Category Mapping, Visibility Mapping, Topics Mapping, Author Mapping and Logs.

SettingWhat it is
Translation MethodAI translation through OpenRouter, or DeepL.
Source LanguageTaken from the sending site’s language.
Target LanguageThe language the article is translated into.
Target Site URLThe address of the receiving site.
Authentication TokenA shared key. Both sites must have the same token. We set it up for you.
AI ModelThe AI model used for translation, for example Claude or GPT.
Custom Translation InstructionsYour own guidance for the translation, such as house style or words that must not be translated.

The OpenRouter key is entered once under Aeon News Options › AI Integration. The DeepL key is entered in the add-on. Keys are never shown in documentation or screenshots.

Without a translation key, the article is copied untranslated.

Map sections, topics and writers

The receiving site has its own categories, visibility terms, topics and writers. On the four mapping tabs, choose for each one on the sending site where it should go on the receiving site, and save each tab.

  • Only terms and writers that already exist on the receiving site can be chosen. Create missing ones first.
  • Terms without a mapping are left out of the copy.
  • Map the writers. An article whose writer is not mapped is credited to the person who sends it.

Send articles

  1. Open Posts › All Posts on the sending site.
  2. Tick one or more articles.
  3. Choose Migrate & Translate under Bulk actions and click Apply.
  4. The articles are sent one at a time. A Migrated mark in the list shows which have been sent.
  5. On the receiving site, open the drafts, read them and publish.

What is copied

  • Title, text, excerpt and the article’s fields, including the theme’s fields for headline style, image layout, summaries and the fact box.
  • Categories, visibility and topics according to the mapping.
  • The featured image and images in the text, which are uploaded to the receiving site’s media library.
  • SEO fields from Rank Math, copied as they are. Check the translated title and description before publishing.

Embedded posts and videos keep their original addresses.

Translation

AI translation is asked to keep meaning, tone, structure and formatting, and to add a short explanation where a reader abroad needs context, for example for a Swedish authority. DeepL translates directly, without such additions.

Always read the draft before publishing:

  • headline, standfirst and quotations;
  • names, places, dates and figures;
  • links, embeds and formatting;
  • image captions and credits.

If the translation service does not answer, the add-on keeps the original text for that part, so a draft can contain untranslated passages.

Good to know

  • Every send creates a new draft. Sending the same article twice gives two drafts on the receiving site. Nothing is overwritten.
  • Larger batches take time. Articles are processed one at a time while the page waits, and each AI translation is charged by the provider. Send in batches of a few articles.
  • Logs shows what was sent and when, and any errors.
